General Services Administrator Martha Johnson on Friday announced that Steve Kempf, currently the Federal Acquisition Service's deputy commissioner, will take over as FAS acting commissioner on April 3.
Jim Williams, the current head of FAS, announced he would retire earlier this month.
Kempf is an 18-year veteran of the FAS team and took on his current role in January.
In a letter to staff, Johnson wrote:
Steve has served in multiple leadership roles throughout FAS and its predecessor organizations. I am confident that he is the right person to lead the service through this transition. In this role, Steve will help carry out FAS' important work -- from greening federal purchasing, supplying war fighters serving abroad to supporting the Networx transition.
Kempf previously served as the assistant commissioner for acquisition management and deputy assistant commissioner for integrated technology services, where he oversaw GSA's information technology schedules, governmentwide acquisition contracts, and network services program.
