The long-awaited reform of federal hiring procedures is finally underway, and the public soon may be able to follow the government's progress in deploying new practices.

In a memo released Tuesday, President Obama called on agencies to move towards a resume-based system and for managers to be involved in and held accountable for their hiring process. The Office of Personnel Management will take on the memo's directives, including the creation of a new, public-facing website.

The website, according to the memo, will be used to collect human resources data and track agencies' progress implementing the reforms. It also will be a resource for federal leadership to share best practices about the hiring process.

The directive doesn't outline the timeframe or specific metrics to be included. And whether the project will provide the public a meaningful look at the new processes and agencies an effective tool for managing and measuring those processes remains to be seen.

In any case, Nextgov will keep you informed of OPM's progress as it stands up this new website.
