Winstar scores second MAA

For the second time in less than a week, Winstar Communications Inc. has been awarded a Metropolitan Area Acquisition contract from the General Services Administration, the company announced Monday.

Under the latest deal — a four-year contract worth $200 million — Winstar will provide data and local switched-voice services to agencies, contractors and federally supported universities and laboratories in Los Angeles. Winstar also will provide dedicated transmission services. Pacific Bell Communications Inc. also was awarded the contract.

On Friday, the telecommunications company announced a sole-source MAA contract to provide data services to federal employees in Cincinnati. The estimated value of the four-year contract is $100 million.

"These two government awards, which we received in separate bids over a period of two days, are a validation of the quality and reach of our broadband network and services we provide," said William Rouhana Jr., Winstar chairman and chief executive officer. "This MAA contract win is a landmark development for Winstar."

All previously awarded contracts had been made to incumbent AT&T.
