FCC signals concern for safety

While considering allowing ultra-wideband technology to operate unlicensed,

the Federal Communications Commission will ensure that safety services,

such as the Global Positioning System, are protected from interference.

The FCC adopted a notice of proposed rule-making Wednesday that opens a

comment period to provide documentation that supports or opposes the operation

of UWB in the radio spectrum.

GPS users are fearful that UWB technology, which facilitates radar imaging

and detection and broadband wireless communications, may interfere with

the GPS signal used to navigate aircraft and guide missiles.

FCC noted that further testing and analysis would be needed before UWB technology

could be authorized to operate in the bands used for the GPS services. Test

results are due by Oct. 30.
