NIH awards Web hosting contract
Qwest will get $40 million for Web hosting and back-up computing capability.
The National Institutes of Health awarded a 10-year, $40 million Web hosting contract to Qwest Communications International Inc.
Under the contract, announced this week, Denver-based Qwest will support the back-up computing capability for NIH's 27 institutes and centers across the country.
Qwest will provide total Web hosting for NIH servers, multigigabit Internet connections, the NIH campus, the Internet2 Abilene Network and program management, the company said. Qwest is also the backbone provider for the network connecting NIH and more than 130 universities and research institutions.
Web hosting takes place at one of eight locations in Sterling, Va.; Burbank, Sacramento and Sunnyvale, Calif.; Chicago; Denver; Newark, N.J. and Tampa, Fla.
