DOD to issue net-centric guidelines

The Defense Department plans to issue in February 2004 guidance for moving more quickly to a net-centric environment.

John Stenbit, assistant secretary of Defense for networks and information and chief information officer, and Michael Wynne, undersecretary of Defense for acquisition, technology and logistics, will prepare and issue DOD's new net-centric guidelines, said Paul Wolfowitz, deputy secretary of Defense, in a Nov. 5 memo to 15 Defense agencies.

"At a minimum, the guidance will require approaches to address the department's Net-Centric Data Strategy and Information Assurance Strategy; alignment with the Net-Centric Operations and Warfare Reference Model; and transition priorities, and budget plans and schedules to implement Global Information Grid (GIG) Enterprise Services: Core Enterprise Services implementation," Wolfowitz said.

DOD will use its fiscal year 2006 program review to start influencing the shift to GIG Core Enterprise Services, he said. Stenbit's and Wynne's offices will establish teams to migrate to a net-centric environment using core enterprise services, he said.

GIG Core Enterprise Services include collaboration, messaging and security processes and technologies, all designed to make information quickly available to warfighters and intelligence analysts.
