Hawaii frees up Five-O

Honolulu's emergency responders will use wireless modem cards from AT&T Wireless under a new contract.

The city and county of Honolulu ordered 1,600 cards for police, fire and emergency services officers, according to company officials. The cards give users access to AT&T's EDGE data network from remote locations.

The network's name stands for Enhanced Data for Global Evolution. The contract value was not disclosed.

In Hawaii, the system will be used to dispatch first responders to incident scenes and allow officers to write and transmit reports directly from their vehicles. The system also will allow users to access criminal databases to retrieve photographs and documents.

The EDGE network is available in more than 7,500 cities and towns and along 30,000 miles of highways across the nation, according to AT&T Wireless officials.
