Hurricane aid covers NASA repair funds

A hurricane disaster relief package approved last week includes money for fixing communications equipment at NASA's Kennedy Space Center.

The measure, passed by Congress and signed by President Bush last week, would authorize $89 million for NASA to repair buildings and communications systems at Kennedy Space Center, which was recently hit by the trio of hurricanes that swept through central Florida. Systems with outside equipment were damaged, including exposed satellite dishes, said agency spokeswoman Melissa Mathews.

Public announcement system speakers and security cameras were also hit. The three hurricanes that hit Kennedy Space Center were Charley, Frances, which did the majority of the damage, and Jeanne.

The money for NASA is part of a larger package that authorizes a total of $11.6 billion in funds for hurricane relief.
