EMC acquires federal presence in Internosis

EMC expanded its professional services capabilities this week by acquiring Internosis, an information technology services firm with customers in the federal market.

Internosis, based in Greenbelt, Md., provides IT strategy, application development, IT infrastructure and managed services for Microsoft environments. The company is now the Microsoft practice within EMC Technology Solutions, EMC’s professional services unit. Internosis has about 250 service employees.

Internosis, which has served in both the civilian and defense sectors, also provides a government presence. The company is a member of Lockheed Martin’s team on the $152 million Army Knowledge Online contract.

An EMC spokeswoman said that Internosis’ “reputation within the federal government was certainly one of several factors that attracted us to the firm.” She added that EMC expects its professional services business within government to benefit from Internosis’ federal experience.

The acquisition fits into EMC’s bid to branch out into software and services, according to industry watchers.

“Most companies that have grown out of the storage space have begun moving away from a uniquely hardware focus to incorporating either enhanced software or new services,” said Research Director Joyce Tompsett Becknell, in a research brief for The Sageza Group. “EMC is one of the organizations who have chosen to pursue both directions aggressively through a series of acquisitions and organic growth.”

EMC is perhaps better known for its software acquisitions, which include Documentum, Legato, and VMware.
