Qwest names new government relations head

Tom McMahon has been a press secretary for two members of Congress.

Qwest Communications International has chosen Tom McMahon to be its new director of corporate communications and government relations. McMahon will be responsible for external and internal communications for Qwest’s federal relations and federal government sales.

“Tom has represented senior members of Congress as well as innovative technology companies,” said Gary Lytle, Qwest’s senior vice president of federal relations and the leader of the company’s Washington office, in a written statement. “We are pleased to have him join our team in Washington and assist in managing the federal issues that affect Qwest and its customers throughout the West and the rest of the nation.”

McMahon served as press secretary for Rep. Bill Nichols and later for Sen. Howell Heflin, both from McMahon’s home state of Alabama. He has also worked at communications firms developing public affairs programs for technology companies. Before joining Qwest, McMahon was vice president of communications and government affairs at WaveCrest Laboratories in Dulles, Va.
