Sun unveils new systems, storage and software

Sun Microsystems introduced several new systems, storage and software products today at the company’s annual user event in New York.

Sun officials said the new products demonstrate how the company is helping users improve efficiency, reduce costs and increase data protection.

The latest additions to the company’s portfolio include:

• Sun Java System Identity Manager Version 7.0, an identity management suite that attempts to ease users’ regulatory compliance concerns by combining user provisioning with identity auditing. User provisioning is the process of creating, updating and deleting user access across applications and systems. Identity auditing is the process of analyzing applications and systems for identity control violations and notifying corporate compliance officers of those violations.


• Sun StorageTek Crypto-Ready T1000, which provides device-level encryption for high-end tape drives, reducing the risk of exposing data to unauthorized people.


• Sun Fire workgroup servers with high-performance UltraSPARC IIIi processors, offering increased memory and throughput and a 20 percent performance boost compared with previous Sun Fire servers.


• The Sun Ultra 25 Workstation, a new entry-level system that provides preinstalled software to aid in the development of new applications.


• Sun Secure Application Switch N1216, which helps increase performance and security of networks and applications across the Sun Fire server family.

Sun officials also said they are submitting the Solaris 10 Operating System with Solaris Trusted Extensions for the highest level of security certification. The operating system is in evaluation for the Common Criteria Certification Labeled Security Protection Profile at Evaluation Assurance Level 4+.
