DARPA funds junior researchers
The program seeks to develop new ideas to deal with the Defense Department's needs.
The Defense Department will fund research projects done by junior faculty members at academic institutions to expose researchers to the agency’s needs and development process, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has announced.
The solicitation is from DARPA. The agency’s Young Faculty Award program provides funding to researchers early in their careers to develop new ideas in the context of DOD needs, according to DARPA.
“DARPA’s long-term goal for this program is to develop the next generation of academic scientists, engineers and mathematicians in key disciplines who will focus a significant portion of their careers on Department of Defense and national security issues,” DARPA said.
The solicitation is for research and development projects in physical sciences, engineering and mathematics that are of interest to DARPA’s Microsystems Technology and Defense Sciences offices. Applicants are encouraged to submit high-risk ideas with a potential high payoff, DARPA said.
The program targets untenured faculty members within six years of an appointment to a tenure-track positions.
