Defense cloud plans still up in the air

Defense Department CIO Teri Takai expects to unveil the plan for reducing the cost of cloud services soon, reports NextGov.com.

Tony Montemarano, DISA director for strategic planning and information, told NextGov Takai will reveal in the coming weeks how military agencies will comply with a 2012 National Defense Authorization Act provision. The provision requires a departmentwide plan for moving to commercial cloud services if they can met security needs at a lower price than those provided by DISA. The department pushed back the initial Jan. 15 to study whether private clouds can meet the department's requirements.

DISA recently shared its plans to make Defense's fragmented IT systems a priority for 2012. The agency is combining two separate offices that have dealt with varying areas of enterprise IT: the computing services directorate and the program executive office for Global Information Grid enterprise services.
