A lot of high-powered tech, wrapped up in an adorable package.

Move over, R2-D2 and C-3PO -- the first real social robotic personal assistant is here.

Developed by Blue Frog Robotics, Buddy is an open source robot, powered by Unity 3D and Android software.

Buddy is free range and can patrol your house autonomously while users aren't home. Connected to the user's smartphone, he can detect fire, burglars and floods and send alerts if something is wrong. Users can take over and control the robot to see through Buddy's eyes to find where the problem is in their home and take care of it.

"I manage a well-known research laboratory in robotics, for professional applications like nuclear and defense and that sort of thing," said Rodolphe Hasselvander, founder and CEO of Blue Frog Robotics. "Two years ago, we decided we wanted to transfer all this high technology into a real affordable robot."

Designed to be a modular, Buddy can accommodate new attachments such as specialized arms that help him perform different kinds of tasks. The open platform means the company hopes the robotics community will also develop new attachments.

One special arm allows Buddy to play fetch with the family dog. Another includes a projector that comes in handy for movie night or slideshows.
