Apps like Burner and Hushed can set up a temporary number, to make sure your real digits stay under wraps.

With the free version of Burner, users get 40 texts and 20 minutes of talk time with each generated number, and can integrate with other apps like Slack and Dropbox.

Hushed takes privacy a step further, automatically deleting text messages and photos after you've seen them.
