The service wants to make sure it actually saves money moving applications from on-prem data centers to the cloud.

Marine Corps Systems Command is giving contractors an extra week to offer insights into the latest in cloud migration techniques and services.

The command extended the deadline from Jan. 23 to Jan. 30 on a request for information on how best to move a “portfolio of applications” from on-premise data centers to a commercial cloud.

“The current roadmap for the Marine Corps migration to a cloud environment includes the closure of multiple on-premises data centers that support multiple portfolios of applications,” according to the RFI posted on FedBizOpps. “In order for the Marine Corps to realize the cost and operational benefits of cloud computing, it must conduct a migration that appropriately rationalizes a portfolio.”

Moving existing applications from a private to a public cloud—also known as lift-and-shift—can often be a complicated, time-consuming and expensive process. The RFI is asking for innovative solutions to streamline the effort, including automation.

Proposed solutions should include a “framework for discovery and rationalization” outlining how the vendor would identify which apps are candidates for migration and what it would take to move each to a cloud environment.

The RFI includes a list of 36 questions covering app discovery, the migration process, rationalization and assessment, costs and company history. The RFI also warns that the command is only interested in receiving information about the specific questions listed.

An amendment posted to FedBizOpps this week extended the response deadline to 2 p.m. Jan. 30. Responses should be submitted by email.
