President Bush signed into law today a $417 billion budget for the Defense Department for fiscal year 2005.
The 2005 Defense Appropriations Act includes almost a $500 million decrease to information technology funding. Lawmakers used $97 million in IT spending cuts to send a message to DOD officials that they need to make more progress updating business systems.
The legislation includes $25 billion in emergency funding to support military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan
On July 22, Congress approved the defense appropriations legislation. It must pass a second bill, the 2005 Defense Authorization Act, before the department can spend the money.
