CIOs detail vision for e-gov

Members of the CIO Council on Thursday detailed their draft strategic plan

for the next fiscal year, highlighting e-government initiatives, interoperability,

security, privacy and workforce issues.

Jim Flyzik, chief information officer at the Treasury Department and

vice chairman of the CIO Council, laid out the six overarching goals that

form the foundation of the strategic plan. He presented the plan at the

Interagency Resources Management Conference in Williamsburg, Va. Other members

of the CIO Council discussed the plan via pre-recorded video messages.

The goals are:

* All citizens will be connected to their government's products, services

and information.

* Governmentwide IT initiatives will be interoperable and innovative.

* There will be a secure and reliable information infrastructure that

citizens can trust.

* There will be IT skills and resources to meet mission objectives.

* There will be collaboration between the public and private sectors

to achieve better government.

* There will be investment in management policies, practices and tools

that enable the improved delivery of government programs and services.

Flyzik said the CIO Council is preparing a brief for the next administration

on "what we think is important." The report will include achievements of

the CIO Council, the strategic plan, the role of the CIO and "where we want

to go in the future," he said. The CIO Council is looking for input on the

plan from academia, industry and other government stakeholders.
