Transformation defined

Gen. Eric Shinseki, Army chief of staff, announced a year ago that the service

would transform itself into a lighter, more mobile and more deadly force

capable of responding to any crisis within 96 hours.

The transformation will take about 30 years to complete and involves

building the capability to gather and disseminate accurate information faster

than enemies to allow faster decision- making. It relies on information

technologies at all levels, from reconnaissance satellites to Global Positioning

System receivers embedded in smart munitions for greater accuracy.
