Lockheed tops DOD biz list

100 Companies Receiving the Largest Dollar Volume of Prime Contract Awards

Lockheed Martin Corp. grabbed the top spot for reported business with the Defense Department last year, according to a list released Wednesday by the Pentagon.

The DOD list measures the net value of contract awards in fiscal 2000 that were at least $25,000. Lockheed had $15.12 billion in such business last year. The list doesn't include non-DOD contracts that Defense agencies use to buy goods and services.

Northrop Grumman Corp. placed No. 5 on the list, with $3.08 billion, and TRW Inc. placed eighth, with $2 billion. Science Applications International Corp. came in 10th with $1.5 billion.

Northrop Grumman should finish higher in fiscal 2001 because it bought Federal Data Corp. last year from The Carlysle Group, which was eleventh with $1.2 billion in DOD business. In late December, Northrop Grumman also agreed to purchase Litton Industries, and the company also gobbled up Logicon Inc. and Sterling Software Inc.'s federal group last year.

Computer Sciences Corp. finished 12th at $1.16 billion, and Marconi Corp. placed 14th with $997 million. Dyncorp had the No. 17 spot with $771 million.

The information technology-related vendors were nestled among a diverse group of vendors, including Procter & Gamble Co., Rolls-Royce PLC, Philip Morris Companies Inc., Federal Express Corp. and the governments of Canada and Germany, as well as oil and shipbuilding companies and research universities.

Companies have different ways of tracking their sales—some don't include them until they get paid, for example. Such practices disrupt lists such as this one from DOD.
