IBM acquiring Informix Software
Company provides database management systems for customers, including NIMA
IBM announced Tuesday that it will purchase Informix Software, a database business with customers in the intelligence community and elsewhere.
The agreement calls for IBM to purchase Informix Software for $1 billion in cash, continuing IBM's strategy of expanding its distributed database business. IBM's revenues in that sector grew 36 percent in the first quarter of 2001.
Informix Software, a division of Informix Corp., provides database management systems for data warehousing, business intelligence and transaction processing. The company has about 100,000 customers, including the National Imagery and Mapping Agency.
"Customers are aggressively investing in data management software because data collection, storage and use are at the core of a successful e-business," Sam Palmisano, IBM president and chief operating officer, said in a written announcement.
Once the sale is final, IBM will integrate Informix database business operations and personnel into IBM Software, the company's data management division. IBM will market Informix's database products worldwide through an integrated IBM and Informix sales force, and it will maintain existing relationships with Informix customers and business partners.
The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of 2001.
