'Placeholder' requests

Pentagon officials refer to the fiscal 2002 budget as a placeholder until they finish the Quadrennial Defense Review. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told Congress last week that after 2002, funding for "transforming" the military will need to rise dramatically.

Still, the budget request includes big increases for efforts that involve information technology.

Those programs include:

Program2001 in millions 2002 in millions
Army digitization $223 $289
Global Hawk unmanned plane 166 289
Joint Tactical Radio System 90 186
Joint experimentation 51 100
Deployable joint command and control 0 50
Nanotechnology 44 58
