New CIO starts at Army Reserve

Daniel Wiener II took over as chief information officer of the Army Reserve last month.

Wiener, the first member of the Senior Executive Service in Army Reserve history, will be formally sworn in Feb. 26. He is taking over for Col. Thomas Maiello Jr.

As CIO, Wiener is responsible for directing and overseeing plans and programs for all of the organization's information systems. He controls the direction of all the Reserve's information management programs and activities, including information systems, technology and operations at the Army Reserve-Personnel Command, Office of the Chief, Army Reserve, and subordinate commands and units.

Wiener previously was president and managing principal for Astron Communications Group, where he led a technical, management and policy consultancy to Fortune 100 defense and aerospace corporations.

Before that, Wiener was vice president of advanced programs and technical adviser to the chairman of Unisys Corp., where he was responsible for directing international defense business, strategic program development, and science and technology policy.

In addition to senior executive government service, Wiener also has four years of active-duty service in electronic warfare-related Naval aviation activities.

He has also served as associate dean for research for the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science.

Wiener is a past recipient of the Army's Exceptional Civilian Service award.
