More projects on the horizon

While figuring out the best architecture for the Office of Management and Budget’s 24 e-government initiatives, Debra Stouffer also is setting the table for the next set of projects.Stouffer, on a 90-day detail to OMB from her job as deputy CIO at the Housing and Urban Development Department, is looking at the basic elements of agencies’ electronic initiatives and identifying redundant business processes.“We are looking at how agencies perform the processes that support the business lines,” she said. “We will add them to the portfolio for the 2004 budget.”The projects will focus on four areas:
homeland security
economic stimulus
social services
back-office operations.
Stouffer said the search for worthy projects is similar to the efforts of the Quicksilver task force, which helped cut down 300 project submissions to the 24 projects that are now being developed.
“We will not have as many [projects] as the task force did,” she said. “I could imagine adding two or three more in each of the four areas. We don’t want to put so much on the agencies’ plate that they can’t do it. But this is a way to keep momentum going.”
Stouffer expects to send project recommendations to Mark Forman, OMB’s associate director for IT and e-government, later this month. The final list could be released in May.
