OMB will use GPEA reports to track agency e-gov efforts

The Office of Management and Budget wants agencies to view their e-government work in the context of complying with the Government Paperwork Elimination Act. To help agencies in this effort, OMB last week released a draft memo to CIOs detailing information agencies need to provide when updating their GPEA plans.Agencies, which have until October 2003 to fully comply with GPEA, must submit progress reports by Sept. 9. OMB said it would use the GPEA data to push agencies toward e-government services by having them analyze what projects are practical to meet the end goal of delivering services electronically and eliminating paper records.The memo asks agencies to provide information on how their GPEA progress relates to their e-government programs, as well as to governmentwide e-government strategies. OMB also is requesting that CIOs identify new agency and cross-agency projects and note what is being done to make sure priority projects are completed on time.OMB, the General Services Administration and the CIO Council developed a Microsoft Access template that lets agencies enter, report and analyze their data.
