IRS uses Web to try to locate recipients of unclaimed refunds

IRS officials hope that the service's new “Where’s My Refund?” Web page can help it find nearly 97,000 taxpayers that haven’t claimed their 2001 tax year refunds.The agency has $80 million in undelivered refunds for tax returns filed this year.“It’s easier than ever for taxpayers to track down an undelivered refund check,” IRS acting commissioner Bob Wenzel said.To see a Web page that shows the status of their refund checks, taxpayers go to and then enter their Social Security numbers, filing status and the amounts of the refunds shown on their 2001 tax returns. The new way to inform taxpayers of their refunds is a “successful example” of the IRS computer modernization in the works, IRS spokesman Anthony Burke said.The Treasury Department maintains undelivered refunds indefinitely.
