CIO comment sought on EA models

"Review of draft service component and technical reference models"

The Office of Management and Budget issued a memo to agency chief information officers Jan. 31, asking them to review and comment on the latest two draft enterprise architecture models.

Last year, the Federal Enterprise Architecture Program Management Office (FEA-PMO) released the Business Reference Model, which outlines all the information technology-supported business functions performed governmentwide.

Starting with the fiscal 2004 budget, released Feb. 3, OMB is using the FEA to better coordinate and consolidate agencies' IT investments.

The draft Service Component Reference Model and Technical Reference Model take the alignment of programs and investments several steps further, focusing on the services agencies perform and the technical standards and specifications that support those services.

Both draft reference models are available for agencies to review on the CIO Council's secure site. The FEA-PMO also is developing an agency review and comment template that will highlight the areas the office is seeking comment on. It also will make it easier for the office to use the information.

Comments are due by March 7. Agencies may also meet with the program management office to discuss specific issues.
