Everson confirmed as IRS chief

The Senate on May 1 confirmed Mark Everson as commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service.

The White House nominated Everson in January, aiming to take advantage of his experience as deputy director for management and controller of the Office of Federal Financial Management at the Office of Management and Budget.

In a statement, Everson said he looks forward to working on the IRS' many challenges, including the need to "modernize its antiquated business processes and technologies."

At his confirmation hearing in March, Everson highlighted getting the IRS business systems modernization program back on track as one of his top priorities. It is one of many information technology programs on the General Accounting Office's biannual high-risk list.
