Galvan named SBA's CIO

Stephen Galvan, former e-government portfolio manager for the Office of Management and Budget, has been appointed as the new chief information officer for the Small Business Administration, officials announced July 2.

Galvan replaces Lawrence Barrett, who retired in May.

Galvan, also a former president of a small business consulting firm, has more than 20 years of industry experience in e-business, telecommunications, media, utilities, consumer products and insurance companies. At OMB, he helped reduce costs in knowledge and financial management by improving internal government processes, according to SBA officials.

As SBA's CIO, Galvan will be responsible for information technology management, oversight, standards, funding and resource management, officials said. He will implement the 2003 strategic IT plan, which brings the agency into compliance with the president's small business management agenda.

Galvan has a master of business administration degree from the University of Chicago and a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from the University of Illinois, Chicago. He has also completed master's work in quantitative economics and serves on the Department of Economics Advisory Board at the University of Illinois, Chicago. He is a member of the Chicago chapter of the Society of Information Management.
