IRS smooths online payment
No need to log in more than once to pay the taxman twice.
The Internal Revenue Service hopes its latest Web upgrades will make it easier to pay taxes online.
On Monday, the IRS said its online system for electronic tax payments has been changed so users have better access to their information and an easier data changing system. Individuals now can make or schedule several payments without needing to log out and log in after each transaction. Individuals can now change information such as bank account numbers without re-enrolling.
The IRS site also offers more data on past payment, including expanding that history from three months to 16 months and allowing individuals to search their information by date, type, amount and other factors.
As more states go online with their tax payment systems, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System is linking to them directly. So far, the list includes Arizona, California, Idaho, Iowa, Nebraska and New Jersey.
E-filing use has grown every year. Last year the system collected more than $1.5 trillion, with more than 4 million individuals enrolled in the program. It has been online since 2001, although it has collected payments via phone and other means since 1996.
