CDX as a starting point

Environmental Protection Agency officials plan to build on the success of the Central Data Exchange, the point of entry for submitting data to the agency through the Environmental Information Exchange Network.

"I think what we're doing with CDX is somewhat novel in federal government," said Kimberly Nelson, the EPA's chief information officer. "Through that, we envisioned the need to expand that capability to include access from others outside of the agency to be able to obtain information in a secure fashion." CDX, which currently has more than 100,000 registered users, will be one of many components under the portal's framework. Other pieces to the puzzle include metadata and data registries; the Enterprise Repository, which is designed to replace the Envirofacts Warehouse; geospatial datasets; identity and access management solutions; and analytical tools to eliminate redundancies.
