Virginia honors state IT projects
At its annual IT symposium, the Commonwealth honors state, local and private-sector organizations for technology innovation.
ROANOKE, Va.—At the Commonwealth of Virginia IT Symposium yesterday, state technology secretary George Newstrom presented awards to state, local and private-sector organizations for technology innovation.The winners in each category were:
- Integrated enterprise: Virginia State Police and Novell Inc. for a secure, virtual private network
- Public-private partnership: Virginia Transportation Department and TrafficLand Inc. of Fairfax, Va., for placing 200 traffic webcams on major highways
- Innovation: Tele-Works Inc. of Blacksburg, Va., for developing a first-responder Web broadcast module for multiple types of communications devices
- Enterpreneur: Comprehensive Computer Solutions Inc. of Blacksburg for building a $22 million global technology business
- Local government: The city of Hampton for its Knowledge Management and Services Channel Consolidation Initiative, and Wise County for its Mapping and Land Information System
- Large agencies: VDOT for Project Dashboard, and the Social Services Department's Division of Licensing Programs for its help and information network
- Small agencies: Commonwealth's Attorneys' Services Council for the Attorney Information System, and the Game and Inland Fisheries Department for its online hunting and fishing license program
- Higher education: State Council of Higher Education for the Virginia Virtual Library, and a consortium of four state universities for the Virginia Alliance for Secure Computing and Networking
- K-12 education: Henrico County Public Schools for providing notebook PCs to students, and Fairfax County Public Schools for its Education Decision Support Library.
