DHS officials hope to take infrared countermeasures developed by the military and adapt them for commercial jets to protect them against handheld missile systems that can be launched from the ground and targeted at an aircraft.
The department announced last month that it intends to spend $100 million to develop antimissile technologies for commercial planes. The move comes as military experts continue to express grave concerns about the potential for surface-to-air missiles and evidence that terrorist groups might use such weapons against U.S. airlines.
