EPA, NSF garner management honors

President's Management Agenda scorecard

The National Science Foundation and the Environmental Protection Agency received the Presidential Award for Management Excellence last week, the highest honors for management success in the federal government.

The EPA, which received honorable mention last year, earned the award for performance in the area of improved financial performance in the President's Management Agenda. NSF was honored for its success in expanded e-government.

"Quality management and results are the focus of this administration," White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card said in a statement. "President Bush has a goal of getting all federal agencies to green on the PMA scorecard, and those agencies there now are models and examples of public servants at work, and the quality, success, and progress of the PMA at work."

The award recipients showed the most progress in the management agenda, which is scored quarterly in five areas: human capital, competitive sourcing, financial management, e-government and budget performance. NSF was the only agency to receive a green score in the area of e-government on the management scorecard released in September. The EPA, along with NSF and the Social Security Administration, received green scores in the area of financial management.

Three agencies received honorable mention awards: the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in the area of expanded e-government, NASA in the area of budget and performance integration and the Social Security Administration in the areas of improved financial performance and strategic management of human capital.

The awards ceremony, hosted by the Office of Personnel Management, was held at ceremony held at the Corcoran Gallery of Art.
