Buying into enterprise architecture

For an enterprise architecture to be a fundamental part of an organization, it must be more than a product generated in the chief information officer's office. The U.S. Mint charted its own course to get support agencywide.

Enterprise architecture is not new at the Mint — officials have been trying to put various pieces of it in place since 2000. But it didn't get any traction until CIO Jerry Horton came to the agency in mid-2002, said Tan Van Luong, the Mint's chief enterprise architect.

"He started to see the importance of the enterprise architecture as a tool
