Montana puts vehicle data online
Information from the Motor Vehicle Division is often requested by banks, credit unions, car dealers and other organizations.
The Montana Justice Department earlier this month launched a new online vehicle search service that allows private-sector users authorized by the department to quickly access information statewide.
The information held by the Montana Motor Vehicle Division is often requested by banks, credit unions, car dealerships, insurance companies and other organizations. As with the growing number of self-service applications on the Web, the online search makes finding information easier and faster, officials said.
Organizations must register with the state DOJ, and authorization levels vary. Depending on the authorization, organizations can access information on the basic details of a vehicle, its owner, his or her lien history, the license plate number and more.
Each organization can receive up to 10 user names and passwords to allow multiple employees to perform the searches.
"This new online solution gives financial institutions and car dealers fast, easy access to the information they need to do business," Attorney General Mike McGrath said.
