Major programs within the Interior Department

: Interior officials are developing a project management plan to implement Microsoft Exchange for messaging across the department. Their current target is to end the department’s use of Novell NetWare and Lotus Notes messaging by December. Interior already has ended its use of Sendmail from Sendmail Inc. of Emeryville, Calif.: Interior planners seek to reduce the department’s collection of Web servers, which now number about 2,500 at more than 2,000 offices across the country. The project involves reducing the department’s Web domains, which now number eight, and delivering content to the public through a single Interior portal.: Officials seek to increase the number of enterprise licenses fielded across the department, which now number eight. They are negotiating two more. “This dovetails with the General Services Administration’s SmartBuy initiative,” CIO Hord Tipton said.: Interior’s bureaus are using the Microsoft Windows Active Directory environment to migrate their domains to a single “forest,” Tipton said. The Active Directory system for managing network resources and security at Interior comprises a single forest in which the trees are domains, he said.
