Air Force issues enterprise IT strategy

A report identifies nine areas in which technology can help the service.

Air Force officials said nine information technology services can improve the delivery of information to airmen and change the way the service operates.

A new draft document, "Air Force Enterprise IT Services Strategy," explains nine services that could be provided servicewide. They include:

  • Collaboration.
  • Discovery.
  • Messaging.
  • Mediation.
  • Enterprise storage.
  • Enterprise application hosting.
  • Enterprise services management.
  • Information assurance security.
  • User assistance.

James Roche, the Air Force's secretary, and Gen. John Jumper, Air Force chief of staff, called for creation of the Air Force Enterprise IT Services Strategy last year so the service could better use data and technologies to help win wars. The strategy follows the Air Force's 2-year-old initiative to manage the service as an enterprise.

The strategy started with computer network and server consolidation. The two projects annually save $200 million and allow service officials to reallocate 1,000 personnel from business IT work to warfighting IT ones, said John Gilligan, the Air Force's chief information officer.
