CACI gets ERA work

The company will work on document declassification and Freedom of Information Act compliance.

CACI International Inc. officials announced that Harris Corp. awarded the company a one-year contract to support the design phase of the Electronic Records Archive (ERA) program for the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration.

CACI's role will focus on developing software and business processes for document declassification, Freedom of Information Act compliance and related access and security control. The company already provides this function for NARA and other federal agencies through its HighView document and workflow system.

"Their role on the ERA is primarily for access review, [which is] monitoring and granting access to the database," said Sleighton Meyer, senior manager of marketing communication for Harris' government business. "That's what they've been doing for NARA and that's why we picked them."

Design awards for teams led by Lockheed Martin Corp.'s transportation and security solutions division and Harris' Government Communications Systems division were announced at $9.5 million and $10.6 million, respectively. Federal officials hope that electronic archiving will extend beyond government to make it possible for doctors to quickly access health records, for example.

Accessible to government officials and the public, ERA will be a dynamic system for preserving virtually any electronic record.

NARA officials are supposed to have an operational archive based on one of the two teams' designs by 2007. They expect full development of the system to cost $500 million by its completion in 2011.
