Former congressman joins House committee staff

Ed Schrock, a former Republican Virginia Beach representative, will begin working Jan. 10 as a staff member on the House Government Reform Committee, spokesman David Marin said.

Schrock, who retired from office last year amid controversy, had been a member of the committee. Schrock will be staff director for a new subcommittee, whose name and jurisdiction are still being decided.

"Schrock will be the staff director for whatever subcommittee deals with regulatory issues," Marin said.

Before retiring from office, Schrock, 63, had questioned the Homeland Security Department's ability to create new information systems and simultaneously integrate them when the systems already had development problems.

Schrock announced his retirement in August 2004 and quit his campaign after allegations surfaced that he had sought sex with men. The 24-year Navy veteran and former stockbroker first won his House seat in 2000.
