US-VISIT wants to use radio frequency technology similar to those used for toll booth passes to allow vehicles to cross borders quickly.
Radio frequency technology will speed up and secure passage through land borders this summer, said officials for the U.S. Visitor and Immigrant Status Indicator Technology program.
US-VISIT officials will test radio frequency technology later this month to allow vehicles to cross borders quickly, said P.T. Wright, executive director of U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The technology is similar to that used for toll booth passes, such as E-ZPass.
US-VISIT employees will test the technology, Wright said, speaking today at the U.S. Conference of Mayors. US-VISIT workers already use biometrics such as digital fingerprint scans and photographs to determine if someone attempting to enter the United States matches the visa issued by the State Department. Officials also check the biometric and biographic data against terrorist watch lists.
