FBI picks deputy CIO

FBI officials have appointed a new counterintelligence and counterterrorism expert to be second in command of IT.

FBI Director Robert Mueller announced Monday that Robert Garrity Jr. will be the bureau’s deputy chief information officer. In that role, he will oversee the FBI’s daily IT operations.

Garrity will also be in charge of the agency's business process re-engineering program, which aims to improve the agency’s business operations.

Garrity will report to Zalmai Azmi, the FBI's CIO. "I am confident that Mr. Garrity’s experience will contribute greatly to the furtherance of our IT programs as well as the business reengineering project," Azmi said in a statement.

Since joining the FBI in 1976, Garrity has worked in the Intelligence, Criminal Investigative, and Inspection and Records Management divisions at FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C.
