Council seeks leadership training applicants

The Council for Excellence in Government is accepting applications from federal and state employees from now through July 22 for two programs that focus on developing leadership skills.

The Excellence in Government Fellows and e-Government Fellows programs offer senior federal managers and state employees a hands-on approach to work on projects in a collaborative manner with colleagues from their agencies or others. In both programs, successful applicants will meet for about 21 days in several sessions during a year.

The programs are open to federal employees at the GS-14 and GS-15 levels who are looking to take on executive positions, although some individuals at the GS-13 level are admitted after going through a more rigorous screening process.

Although the programs are overwhelmingly attended by federal employees, senior-level state employees interested in the programs may apply. Their applications will also be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. In all, only about 10 state employees have ever graduated from the programs.

The 2005-2006 graduates will join a network of more than 2,000 alumni across the federal government. The government fellows program began about 16 years ago. The e-government program, which was created because council officials realized that technology created a different set of issues, was only started about five years ago. Tuition is $9,400 for each program.
