The Federal Communications Commission this week launched a new customizable e-mail service that is free to subscribers.
Created by the FCC’s Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau, the Consumer Information Registry is an Internet database that can deliver tailored information about the commission’s actions and other events pertaining to telecommunications and other communications services.
Subscribers can choose from 38 listed topics, including access to emergency information, disability issues, homeland security, intergovernmental coordination, rural telecommunications issues, voice over IP and traditional phone service. Attorneys, consultants, engineers and consumers are among those who will benefit from subscribing, according to a FCC press release.
FCC Chairman Kevin Martin "has expressed his interest in ensuring that American consumers continue to enjoy the benefits of the best communications system in the world," said Monica Desai, the bureau’s acting chief, in the release. "I believe the Consumer Information Registry has the potential to play an important role in achieving that goal."
