“DOD Establishes Health Transformation Office”
The Defense Department announced Aug. 31 that it established a new office to reform military health services.
The Military Health System Office of Transformation will provide policies to improve the management of health facilities, procurement and human resources and to develop capabilities at the local command level. The new office will also guide units implementing base realignment and closure actions, medical readiness review initiatives, and local authorities’ working group recommendations, according to a DOD statement.
“This new office will support a progressive agenda for change in the Military Health System,” said Dr. William Winkenwerder Jr., assistant secretary of defense for health affairs.
Rear Adm. John Mateczun, who serves as the Navy’s deputy surgeon general, will direct the new office. The Military Health System recently initiated a new finance system, a new pharmacy formulary and new business practices to improve efficiency.
