Social Security turns to Lockheed Martin for records scanning

The Social Security Administration has awarded a five-year, $124 million contract to Lockheed Martin Corp. to provide IT services under the agency’s Electronic Disability Initiative National Scanning Project.Under the blanket purchase agreement, Lockheed Martin of Bethesda, Md., will scan paper medical and nonmedical records and create digital images for transmission. The images will then be sent to an electronic folder that is part of the agency’s document management architecture.Affiliated Computer Services Inc. of Dallas has partnered with Lockheed Martin as a major subcontractor on the deal.In addition to performing management operations near SSA headquarters in Baltimore, Lockheed Martin will establish and staff three scanning centers to support agency offices in the 50 states, U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Guam.
