Air Force IT adds new moniker

The Air Force’s information technology organization at the Pentagon is adding a new moniker as the service reorganizes its headquarters staff structure to assimilate with the names of the military services and combatant commands.

The Office of the Secretary of the Air Force, Chief of Warfighting Integration and Chief Information Officer, which goes by the acronym SAF/XC, will also receive the designation A6-Communications. SAF/XC, A6-Communications will continue to perform the same duties as SAF/XC, overseeing the service’s warfighting IT, business IT and communications functions.

The Air Staff at Headquarters Air Force adopted the new organizational structure earlier this month. It closely mirrors the Army’s G-staff, the Navy's N-staff and the joint J-staff. The changes at the service’s major commands and warfighter headquarters will occur by May, according to an Air Force statement issued late last month.

“The effort will help the Air Force optimize internal communications and communicate more efficiently with other services,” said Brig. Gen. Marshall Sabol, the Air Force’s director for manpower, organization and resources.

The new structure of the Air Staff at Headquarters Air Force includes:

• A1 — Manpower and Personnel.
• A2 — Intelligence.
• A3 — Air, Space and Information Operations.
• A4 — Logistics.
• A5 — Plans and Requirements.
• A6 — Communications.
• A7 — Installations and Mission Support.
• A8 — Strategic Plans and Programs.
• A9 — Analyses, Assessments and Lessons Learned.
