McQueary resigns

The head of the Homeland Security Department's Science and Technology Directorate announced today that he is resigning.

In a letter to President Bush, Charles McQueary stated that his last day will be March 25.

McQueary served three years as the directorate's first undersecretary and oversaw its creation.

His resignation letter did not state a reason for his decision to resign, but he wrote that he had largely accomplished his two main objectives: building an excellent technical team and launching breakthrough research and development programs.

"The former objective has been achieved with the handpicked team of dedicated men and women who care greatly about the security and wellbeing of the country," McQueary wrote. "The second objective is nearing fruition with the imminent completion of new capabilities for the department."
