IRS names new chief of staff

Kathy Petronchak will help IRS commissioner oversee operations and plan programs.

Kathy Petronchak, who oversees technical tax guidance for large and midsize businesses at the Internal Revenue Service, will become chief of staff for IRS Commissioner Mark Everson starting June 7, according to the agency. She will replace Evelyn Petschek, who is retiring.

“Kathy has critical experience with complex, high-profile issues," Everson said. "She is an excellent fit for this demanding post."

As chief of staff, Petronchak will assist Everson in overseeing the performance of IRS operations and planning program strategies. She will also advise the commissioner and other IRS executives.

Petronchak was appointed to her current position as director of the Pre-Filing and Technical Guidance for the Large and Mid-Size Business Division in June 2004. Her prior executive positions include deputy director of that division, beginning in 2002, and director of field operations for the agency. Petronchak first became an IRS revenue agent in 1979.
