FBI recovers stolen computer with VA data

The Department of Veterans Affairs’ Office of the Inspector General and the FBI announced the recovery of a desktop computer stolen last month from Unisys.

The computer contained insurance claim data, including names, addresses and personal identifiers, for about 16,000 veterans and their families treated in VA medical centers in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

Investigators believe that the VA data was not targeted by the defendant, the IG announcement states. The FBI is doing a forensics analysis to determine if the data was compromised.

According to the IG statement, Khalil Abdullah-Raheem, 21, a resident of Washington, D.C., was arrested Sept. 14 and charged in federal court with theft of government property. He was released on a $50,000 personal recognizance bond.

The VA said Abdullah-Raheem works for a company that provides temporary workers to Unisys.
